An array of auto makers are recalling more than 2 million older-model vehicles to address air bags that can deploy inadvertently because of an electronic component supplied by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., federal regulators said, despite earlier repairs that were supposed to fix the problem.
Manufacturers including Honda Motor Co. HMC, -1.34% Toyota Motor Corp. TM, -2.50% and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV FCAU, -0.90% are recalling 2.12 million car and sport-utility vehicle models dating to the early 2000s, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday.
The recalled vehicles include roughly a million 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe, Dodge Viper, and Toyota Corolla, Matrix and Avalon cars; 750,000 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty and 2002-2004 Grand Cherokee SUVs; and 370,000 2003-2004 Honda Odyssey minivans and 2003 Acura MDX SUVs.
The vehicles were previously recalled, but regulators have identified about 40 vehicles that suffered inadvertent air bag deployments even after receiving earlier repairs.
About a million of the vehicles are also involved in recalls involving Takata Corp. air bags that can rupture and injure consumers, he said.
